The MLTA's National Conference was was buzzing with activity this year. If you missed out, make sure you take a look at Phill Thomas's in-depth report here
Throughout the history of Mountain Leader Training, which was initiated in 1964 by the MLTB, the original Mountain Leadership Certificate has undergone considerable change reflecting a natural progression as the scheme evolved towards the current Mountain Leader Award. On its initiation the MLC was the only nationally recognised qualification for people wishing to lead groups into the mountains. As time progressed and the award gained wide spread recognition people discovered the need for other awards within mountain activities that would allow them to operate in different situations. The evolution of the award schemes now offers people quality training and assessment in all aspects of leading and instructing people in the Mountains. Since its initiation in 1964 over one hundred thousand leaders, supervisors and instructors have been involved with one or more of these award schemes. Until now it has been left to the individual to decide whether or not they would continue with their development by further reading, additional training and so on. Some people have chosen to do this by continuing through the award schemes or by regular involvement in the work appropriate to their level of qualification. Either way once people have reached their desired level of qualification involvement with the Boards is much reduced. Mountain Leader Training UK and the Home Nation Training boards have formed the Mountain Leader Training Association so as to provide a facility for its candidates to continue with their development as leaders. The MLTA is governed and administered by active mountaineers. The photos above show MLTUK board members taking advantage of good snow conditions on Crib Goch following the November meeting.
