Insurance scheme for MLTA members only

Mountain Leader Training has been engaged in discussions between the British Mountaineering Council and Perkins Slade for some time now in order to negotiate preferential insurance rates for qualified leaders and instructors, based on the excellent safety record of our award holders. This has now borne fruit with a UK-remit Civil Liability Protection Scheme (i.e. third party injury) that members may well wish to consider joining. Other policies are available from a variety of sources so members are urged to make their own decision about the sort of cover that they require. This information page provides some background information about insurance for walking and climbing activities.

What sort of cover do you already have?

During training and assessment courses:

Registration with Mountain Leader Training does not include any insurance cover. It is the responsibility of the Course Provider to ensure that adequate liability insurance is in place for the duration of the training/assessment course.

Providers will not normally provide cancellation insurance, personal accident insurance or cover for candidate’s own personal equipment. Please check this with your Course Provider and if necessary you may wish to arrange appropriate cover.

Consolidation Period:

Your membership of the BMC, the MCofS or the MCI includes personal civil liability insurance cover as part of your membership. This insurance will cover candidates whilst gaining relevant experience and working with groups between training and assessment but does not include candidates trading under a company name.

It is the responsibility of candidates who are gaining experience during the consolidation period (either through paid employment or as a volunteer) to check that they are covered by an appropriate policy. An employer or voluntary organisation will often provide this insurance cover.

Award Holders:

Award holders who are current members of the BMC, the MCofS or the MCI have personal civil liability insurance cover when operating under the remit of their award providing that all party members are also members of a Mountaineering Council.

Holders of MLT Awards have a responsibility to ensure that when working they have adequate professional liability cover through their employer, operating authority or as a self-employed person.
